First-time teachers

Starting from zero is completely normal.

Many schools in China actively prefer first-time teachers — you arrive enthusiastic, open to their methods, and ready to commit. Schools that welcome beginners say so clearly on their listings.

Do I need teaching experience?

Not always. Many schools will train you from day one — just search for beginner-friendly listings. Experience helps but isn't always required.

What qualifications do I need?

A bachelor's degree in any subject, and ideally a TEFL or CELTA certificate (usually a 4-week online course costing £150–£300).

Is the language barrier a problem?

Most schools don't require Mandarin — you're there to teach English, not translate. A few words of Chinese will help with daily life, though.

How long is a typical contract?

Most contracts are 12 months. Some summer positions run 6–8 weeks. Contracts always include Z-visa support from legitimate employers.
