What to expect

The honest picture of teaching in China

No sugarcoating. Here's what thousands of teachers experience every year when they make this move.

01

You'll earn well

The current average posted salary is ¥24,000+ per month. Many include free or subsidised housing on top. Read more about salaries and life in China.

02

Your school handles the visa

The Z-visa is China's legal work visa, sponsored and processed by your employer. You don't navigate Chinese bureaucracy alone. This is a non-negotiable requirement for all legitimate listings.

03

The experience changes you

You'll teach in one of the world's most dynamic countries, build a CV that stands out, and return with perspective that stays with you for the rest of your career.

The process

Three steps to your first China role

01

Browse verified listings

Every listing shows the full picture — salary, hours, visa status, housing, contract length. No surprises when you arrive.

02

Apply directly

No need to juggle email, apps, and job sites. Keep your search and applications here — everything in one place, with your message going straight to the hiring team.

03

Show up ready to teach

Your school manages the Z-visa paperwork. You pack your bags and board the plane ready for the most interesting chapter of your career.

First-time teachers

Starting from zero is completely normal.

Many schools in China actively prefer first-time teachers — you arrive enthusiastic, open to their methods, and ready to commit. Schools that welcome beginners say so clearly on their listings.

You'll typically need a bachelor's degree and a TEFL certificate. For the full preparation path, start with our teacher guides.

Do I need teaching experience?

Not always. Many schools will train you from day one — just search for beginner-friendly listings. Experience helps but isn't always required.

What qualifications do I need?

A bachelor's degree in any subject, and ideally a TEFL or CELTA certificate (usually a 4-week online course costing £150–£300).

Is the language barrier a problem?

Most schools don't require Mandarin — you're there to teach English, not translate. A few words of Chinese will help with daily life, though.

How long is a typical contract?

Most contracts are 12 months. Some summer positions run 6–8 weeks. Contracts always include Z-visa support from legitimate employers.
